A Long Sought Treasure

When I was a little girl, this was my favorite book and I checked it out of the library over and over and over. I have hunted for this book, off and on, for most of my adult life. It was published in 1964 and has been out of print for ever so long. But I knew I'd find it one day. And I did. I'm not sure exactly what a very small me loved so much about this book, but throughout my adulthood, when I thought of it, what I remembered so vividly were the colors and the illustrations. Black, white, blue, green, and purple. And of course the story is lovely, and feels as relevant today as it did when it was published almost 60 years ago, and television was still new.

Just a sampling, so you get a sense of the story:

""It was a long time since she had seen moonlight on the water,
on account of watching television."

Indeed.

  3. Honeybee: I love books like this, I have Christmas books I put out every year and still read them.
We do not have children, maybe it's the child in me that loves books like this.
Emerald looks like a very sweet cat and a very sweet story.

  9. Honeybee, I love children's book. My children and I went to the library every week My adult daughter has taken her two children to the library every few weeks too, and they are teenagersnow. I loved this book that you treasure now. It is so nice to find something again that meant so much to us as children. I would love to hold that book in my hands and read it too. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
P.S. I loved the library too, when I was young. I still do, and I'm not young.

  10. What a lovely innocent tale! The illustrations are beautiful too, I can see why they stayed with you.
It did remind me of a study I saw recently which asked women “what’s the first thing you would do if there were no men in the world”. The answer from many was “go for a walk after dark”. I can’t remember the last time I walked alone under moonlight. It simply isn’t safe.

  11. Ah, moonlight.... I read your post after I received an email from 123stitch that showed a selection of fabric and a pattern that I was trying to decide what to stitch it on. The fabric selections was theirs, my only input was a skein of floss - Tea and Biscuits - and the photo of the chart. In the center of the photo, one stood out different from the others. I decided to sleep on it. Of course, I chose the one in the center - Winter Moon.... 💓
